James Schulz is an experienced freelance bass player and educator throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. As a performer, he currently most frequently plays with the Santa Cruz Symphony and Bay Philharmonic. He has been contracted with the Santa Cruz Symphony, One Found Sound in San Francisco, and the Rogue Valley Symphony in Southern Oregon. He has also performed with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, Mendocino Music Festival, the Monterey Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Modesto Symphony, Stockton Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, and the Symphony San Jose.

James has over a decade of teaching experience with organizations such as the Golden State Youth Orchestra, Oakland Youth Symphony, the New World Music Academy in Pleasanton, Las Positas College, La Honda Music Camp, JAMS Music in Dublin, various public schools, and many more. He has published an exercise book for double bass titled Double Bass: Excerises, Scales, and Reference. If you’re interested in lessons, see the teaching page for more information.

James studied with Pat Klobas at CSU East Bay (BA 2010), and Steve Tramontozzi at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (MM 2013).
