Inspired by wholesome bands such as The Beatles and Beach Boys, James started playing Electric Bass in High School. He soon discovered progressive rock and metal. It was good for his musical chops, but bad for his fashion sense. He joined the school jazz band and decided to pursue music in higher education.
At CSU East Bay, James learned to play the upright bass under the instruction of Pat Klobas, an incredible player and teacher. He learned important fundamentals of music theory, history, and performing both jazz and classical music. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in music (BA 2010), James decided to double down on classical music and attend the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
At SFCM, studying with Steve Tramontozzi (SF Symphony), James learned higher level symphonic bass playing and soloing. Earning his Master of Music (2013), James entered the world of professional freelancing and private instruction.
